Do you have a camera in your mobile phone? Do you use it to take photos in your daily life to share with friends, using Bluetooth or by uploading to a popular image sharing site? The use of the camera phone is very common in Hong Kong. Yet despite the fact that thousands of images are being taken and circulated every day, the value and potential significance of such images is often overlooked. Hong Kong has the highest rate of mobile phone usage in the world. This technology has enabled new forms of communication, new modes of image production and sharing, new practices of everyday life and new ways of feeling connected within communities. Any trip on the MTR will reveal the widespread use of mobile phones; any meal in a restaurant and any public event will demonstrate the widespread production of images taken with camera phones. The aim of this research study is to gain a greater understanding of how camera phone photography is used in real-life contexts. We are interested in the types of images taken and the meaning that these images have for users. This research study is being conducted under the supervision of Professor Helen Grace, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong. |
